Vietnam’s Industrial Chicken Breeding Up 50%

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, the Vice Director of the Livestock Department of Hanoi's Agriculture and Rural Development Department, the price of poultry breeding has been fluctuating in the market in recent days. In Vietnam, industrial chicken breeding prices have been entirely reliant on two foreign countries, Thailand and Indonesia, who hold almost 100% market share of the whole country. In a statement by industry experts, the cost of breeding production has just reached VND 8,000-12,000 per a chick, and suppliers have profited 30-40% from them. The chicken breeding prices have increased by 50% in October, a contrast from a dormant August and this has led to high profit margins for companies but a disadvantage to local farmers.

3,200 Australian Dairy Cows Settle at Zhongshan Town, Guangxi Province

Seen here in neat rows under the factory shed leisurely grazing, many black and white Holstein cows recently imported from Australia are drawing large interest in Zhongshan town of Hezhou City in the Guangxi Province of China.

The dairy base in Zhongshan Town has a completed silage silo, a concentrated feedstore, a hayloft and backup barn as well other advanced infrastructures. Project managers told reporters that the dairy base has expanded to include 4 barns occupying 22,000 square meters for the 3,200 Holstein cows with that number expected to increase to 3,500 cows by the end of the year. This is part of a plan to invest 250 million RMB in the construction of cow breeding bases in the two phases of Zhongshan Town and Gong’an Town. This plan aims to reach over 10,000 dairy cows and a full load production of 36,000 tons of raw milk by 2016.

According to reports based on the Municiple Bureau of Animal Husbandry Fisheries, Hezhou City has now produced several leading breeding enterprises including Hezhou giant East, Zhong Shan Wens Dairy, and Jiangxi twins to name a few. The city is currently home to a total of 136 breeding enterprises including the top 8 enterprises of the industry and producing over 100 million RMB in annual output value.

In the Zhongshan town Wens Dairy cow base, a number of workers can be seen building new factory sheds. According to the supervisor in charge, the breeding stock will reach 10,000 cows at full capacity when the Zhongshan Town and Gong’an Town dairy cow breeding bases project is completed. Once completed, the bases are expected to become the largest in the Guangxi Province and will require an estimated 70,000 tons of roughage per year, which will effectually promote local farming developments as well as provide over 280 positions for employment. The cow breeding bases are also expected to be the largest raw milk supply base in the region. By then, the citizens of the Guangxi Province can expect to drink pure milk at home.

Shanghai encourages the development of new feed additives to replace antibiotics.

From January to August of this year, the Shanghai Municipal Agricultural Commission investigated and dealt with a wide variety of violations totalling 61 cases of veterinary drugs and feed infractions, including fine and forfeiture cases amounting to 770,000 CNY as well as 2 cases involving excessive antibiotic residues in animal feed.

On September 26th, the Agriculture Commission released a statement titled “Proposed solutions to animal feed antibiotics and other residues in aquaculture in food safety issues”, claiming that Shanghai will continue to encourage and guide those enterprises who have ideals of innovation as well as the capability to develop new feed additives which are more “green”, are pollution-free, can replace the function of new antibiotics, and spare no efforts to provide greater services to support further enterprise technological innovation.

Xu Li, a member of the Municipal People’s Congress, pointed out in a written statement that due to the overuse of antibiotics in animal feed additives, there has been an increase in antibiotic residue in animal meat, potentially causing serious and hazardous harm to people as well as a negative impact on the ecological environment and the further development of animal husbandry. Xu advises to strengthen supervision and technological innovation in order to combat this threatening problem. The Agriculture Commission has also supported this viewpoint by claiming that the city of Shanghai has begun to implement policies to strengthen supervision of various veterinary feed additive enterprises and plan to conduct full coverage inspections on the 188 feed and feed additive manufacturing enterprises this year.

Growth in world meat prices

Global meat prices over the past 10 years has grown rapidly, with the 2002 and 2004 figures for comparison, since 2004, more than two-fold increase in poultry prices, beef prices rose nearly twice the price and pork increased by about 50%.

Rising demand for meat and poultry mainly due to the impact of growth in population and income, this is common phenomenon particularly in the developing countries. Global beef production remained unchanged from 2008 to 2013, while the global pork and poultry production continues to grow at a rate of 2% per year.

In the past two years, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong beef imports tripled and has become the world's largest beef importer. This is under the condition that the global beef prices reached a record high and beef production remained virtually unchanged. U.S. beef production in 2013 is expected to decline 1%, but beef exports are expected to rise 2.8%.

Cargill opens Poultry production base in Lai’an ,Anhui province, China

Cargill held the inauguration ceremony of its world-class integrated poultry operation in Lai’an Anhui today. This project initiated in 2009, is a part of Cargill’s continuous effort to support the modernization of agriculture and food safety in China and the total investment is approximately US$250 million.

The fully-integrated project covers each stage of the poultry supply chain, including chicken breeding, raising, feed production, hatching, slaughtering and processing, which has the capacity to process approximately 65 million chickens per year, as well as 176,000 metric tonnes poultry products per year.

And in a much closer race Cargill, Tyson American also has established his own base in Lvxian, Shandong since 2012, have the capacity of 3.6 million broiler per year. And Tyson also plan to open two biggest broiler factories in Lvxian Town and Yanzhuang Town in 2013.

Year 2013 was a tough year for China’s poultry industry.  From another perspective, the industry performance also provided a rare opportunity for the expansion of the leading enterprises as seen above.

According to Chen Jianhua’s analysis, there are two main reasons why international giants one and another enter China mainland market, First of all, China has a large population and a huge consumer market, any business will not ignore this market. Secondly, with the advance of urbanization as well as the raise of CPI, this market still has a huge room to grow.

In addition, the industry concentration of China market is far less than the United States, Chen Jianhua commented that the top five companiesin he USA combined market share was up to 67%. At present, there are tens of thousands of broiler farming enterprises in China, Fujian Sunner as China's largest broiler farming enterprises, who only controls 5% market share , he also said that China's tomorrow is United States’ today, the future of domestic farming enterprises must have an intense phase integration, now is only a beginning and industry downturns precisely offers a best time for large enterprises mergers and acquisitions.
