White-leg shrimp prices fall in Mekong delta

The prices of unprocessed white-leg shrimp in the Mekong Delta region have declined significantly in the past three months, forcing farmers to make early harvests for fear of losses. One kilogram of white-leg shrimp is now sold at VND109,000-165,000 (USD5.17-7.83) in the region, down by nearly VND10,000 per kilo compared to last week and over VND50,000 per kilo against the end of February.

The price of white-leg shrimp decreased because of the impacts of news about the anti-dumping tariffs on Vietnamese shrimp exports in the United States and stricter controls on antibiotic residues in Vietnamese shrimp shipments in Japan and the European Union. Fast expansion of white-leg shrimp farming in the region this year has also contributed to prices declining, with some 1,500 more hectares in Ca Mau Province compared to the end of 2013. As of late last month, Tra Vinh Province had had 35,300 hectares, up more than 29% over last year and the white-leg shrimp farming area had increased six-folds. Tiger prawn prices in the region have stayed stable, at VND215,000-285,000 per kilo.
