The price of live pig is VND 55,000 per kg (USD2.75)

From April to now, the price of live pig in the South of Vietnam has increased VND 5,000 per kg to reach VND 55,000 per kg due to scarce supply.

Meanwhile, the price of live pig in the North of Vietnam is lower at VND 10,000 per kg compared with the South; it’s about VND 44,000-45,000 per kg. Therefore, the live pig is transported from the North to the South for providing pork consumption demand.

DOC revises up anti-dumping tariffs on tra fish

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced final results of the ninth Period of Administrative Review (POR 9) with anti-dumping tariffs imposed on Vietnamese tra fish up by 2.8 times from the rates determined last September.

Accordingly, compulsory defendant Vinh Hoan Corp enjoys a zero tariff while the rate for voluntary defendants is US$1.2 per kilogram compared to US$0.42 which DOC announced last September. There are 25 enterprises subject to the tariff of US$1.2 per kilogram, including Hung Vuong, while the other exporters must pay US$2.11.

Under the DOC’s preliminary determination last September, compulsory defendants had to pay anti-dumping tariffs of US$0.42 and 2.15 per kilogram while that of voluntary defendants was USD0.99. Seafood exporters in the Mekong Delta region said such adjustments would be of great help for Vinh Hoan Corp. to boost shipments to the U.S. but would hurt other exporters.

The prices of unprocessed tra fish remain high in the Mekong Delta region. Nguyen Ngoc Hai, head of An Thoi Tra Fish Cooperative in Can Tho City, said a kilogram of premium-grade tra was sold at VND25,000-26,000 and the grade-two type at VND24,000-24,500. With such prices, farmers can earn profit of VND2,000-3,000 per kilogram.

Cargill expands animal feed mill in central Vietnam

Cargill said its animal nutrition business has completed the USD 20 million expansion of an animal feed plant in Binh Dinh Province to meet increasing domestic demand, particularly in central Vietnam.

Cargill said in a statement that the expansion increased the plant’s annual capacity to 240,000 tons from 60,000 tons and helped ensure feed safety, ingredient quality and product integrity for the market.

In 2012, Cargill committed to building more animal feed plants in the country in order to expand its animal nutrition business in Vietnam and meet customers’ demand for quality feed and to double its annual feed capacity to 1.5 million tons by 2015. The expanded facility in Binh Dinh Province allows Cargill to produce a total compound feed capacity of 1.4 million tons.

The facility is one of Cargill’s eight compound feed mills in different regions of Vietnam. The company said with the new expansion, it had invested more than USD/10 million in Vietnam’s livestock and aquaculture industry over the last 10 years.

Cargill said it had arranged farming workshops to provide more than 1.5 million Vietnamese farmers with training in practices in animal husbandry through to help raise farming productivity and incomes.

Cargill established its presence in Vietnam in February 1995 with the opening of representative offices in Hanoi and HCMC, and Cargill Vietnam Limited was formed. In December 2009, it became the first U.S. company to obtain a license to distribute products directly in this market.

Update of pig market in Vietnam

Last week I visited Vietnam and discussed the current pig price with a number of farmers! It would seem that the industry has rebounded to high levels of profit!

The first three quarters of 2013 were tough for the market, high corn prices and lower pork prices. As a result a number of producers left the industry and as a result prices have increased! The industry is also enjoying lower corn prices and Vietnamese feed millers have taken this opportunity to increase stocks of corn and placed large orders for corn.

White-leg shrimp prices fall in Mekong delta

The prices of unprocessed white-leg shrimp in the Mekong Delta region have declined significantly in the past three months, forcing farmers to make early harvests for fear of losses. One kilogram of white-leg shrimp is now sold at VND109,000-165,000 (USD5.17-7.83) in the region, down by nearly VND10,000 per kilo compared to last week and over VND50,000 per kilo against the end of February.

The price of white-leg shrimp decreased because of the impacts of news about the anti-dumping tariffs on Vietnamese shrimp exports in the United States and stricter controls on antibiotic residues in Vietnamese shrimp shipments in Japan and the European Union. Fast expansion of white-leg shrimp farming in the region this year has also contributed to prices declining, with some 1,500 more hectares in Ca Mau Province compared to the end of 2013. As of late last month, Tra Vinh Province had had 35,300 hectares, up more than 29% over last year and the white-leg shrimp farming area had increased six-folds. Tiger prawn prices in the region have stayed stable, at VND215,000-285,000 per kilo.
